Guided reading groups - Themes: Survival, World War II, Nazi Occupation, War
Students are reading books that take place during World War II (Snow Treasure, Number the Stars, Devil's Arithmetic, and The Cay) and are making connections to other wars studied throughout the year (French and Indian War, American Revolution).
The students are working on Independent Learning Projects (Passion Projects). The students chose topics that interest them to learn about. They are in the learning and journaling stage. They should be planning a presentation and starting an expository paper (assignment can be found in Google Classroom).
American Government - the students have finished learning about the American Revolution and are now studying how and why the founders created the government we have. They learned about different governments (Roman, Republic, Constitutional) and will finish with our Constitution, branches of government, and Bill of Rights.

1. Why does the sun as a star look larger and brighter than other stars?
2. How is day and night created?
3. How long does it take the Earth to rotate once around?
4. How long does it take the Earth to orbit the sun?
5. How long doe it take the moon to orbit the Earth?
6. Why do shadows look different at different times of the day and different times of the year?
7. Why does the night sky look different at different times of the night and year?

EnVsion - Topic 16 Coordinate Geometry
Students will be taking Math MCAS Monday, May 8th
***** The fifth graders will be participating in many activities and going on several field trips this year in which volunteers/chaperones are welcome to attend. If a parent or other family member (grandparent, etc.) would like to help with the activities or chaperone any of the field trips, a current CORI must be on file. CORIS are good for three years, so if a CORI was obtained in third or fourth grade they should be good for fifth grade (make sure you check the date it was obtained - many forms run out during the fifth grade year). If there is any uncertainity, file another CORI as soon as possible! *********************
Healthy Snack: We will have one healthy snack a day (2:00). The snacks should be small, healthy and mindful of safety concerns; no glass or sharp objects. Just a reminder - this is an allergy aware class (no dairy, cheese products, yogurt, cheese crackers, or tree nuts). Please make sure you check the labels - if it says it has cheese, sour cream, yogurt, or nuts please don't send it in.
